Quantum Field Theory (SS16) [M.Sc.]

Lecturer Prof. Dr. Hans Peter Büchler
Begin of Lecture
05.04.2016
Time / Location
  • Tuesday: 08:00 - 9:30 a.m., ICP Seminar Room 1.079, Allmandring 3
  • Thursday: 08:00 - 9:30 a.m., ICP Seminar Room 1.079, Allmandring 3
Language Lecture: English / Tutorials: English
General Information
  • There are two types of exercises: "Written" exercises are handed in in class and graded/corrected by the tutor. "Oral" exercises are discussed in the tutorials and presented by students on the blackboard.
  • Admission to the final exam requires 80% of the written scores, 66% of the oral scores, and presenting a problem on the blackboard in class twice.
  • Please note that from Tuesday, April 12th, the lecture and the exercise classes will be shifted to the ITP3 Seminar Room V57.5.331.

  • NOTE: From Wednesday, June 1st, the lecture and exercise classes will be shifted back to their original rooms.
Lecture: ICP Seminar Room 1.709, Allmandring 3
    Tutorials: Tuesday: 2.326, Wednesday: 2.120A.

Examination
  • Oral examination (30 minutes)
  • Details will be given in the tutorials.
Literature
Topics The goal is to gain a thorough understanding of relativistic quantum field theory, the concepts of Feynman diagrams, renormalization for quantum electrodynamics, and to extend this knowledge to non-abelian gauge theories. In particular:

  • Relativistic quantum mechanics and Dirac equation
  • Path integral formalism
  • Quantization – Free Fields
  • Interacting fields and Feynman diagrams
  • Elementary processes and first corrections
  • Renormalization
  • Non-abelian gauge fields
